Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood California. While she was still in school, DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of an individual juror. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Neben PR, her agency has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
